Australia’s food and grocery manufacturing sector falls to $131bn, as electricity prices and drought bite

Australia’s food and grocery manufacturing industry has gone backwards under the weight of sluggish domestic demand, drought, and rising electricity costs, prompting warnings a further fall could trigger a wave of local jobs moving offshore.

AFGC chief executive officer Tanya Barden said the more worrying outcome was a thumping 10.3 per cent reduction in capital investment, which is a sign the industry could face an even tougher result this year.

“Capital investment is at its second lowest level in the last 10 years and for me this is the biggest concern, because it affects the future sustainability of the Australian food and grocery manufacturing industry,” Ms Barden said.
