NORTHERN Victoria’s troubled $2 billion irrigation modernisation took another $100 million step today towards its ambitious goal of delivering 204,000 megalitres of water savings towards the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.
Victorian Water Minister Lisa Neville announced $100 million would be used this winter to:
UPGRADE 33 kilometres of channel across 17 sites;
INSTALL automation at 271 sites; and
INSTALL 35km of pipeline across seven sites.
The $100 million is part of a series of funding tranches the Federal Government has handed over to Victoria for investment in more efficient irrigation infrastructure, which deliver water savings for the environment.
The project, which started in November 2011, was originally designed to deliver 204,000 megalitres in water savings by next year.
