RIVERINA farmers Rob and James Browne were more than happy to start harvesting their rice crop last week.

It was a sweet moment for the father-and-son, from Blighty, given last year they couldn’t plant a crop due to a lack of water

Rob, his wife, Mary, and James and his wife, Emma, have 200ha of rice planted and said so far yields were “pretty good” — though they remain concerned the later-sown crops, which will be harvested later, may not fare as well.

Finley rice agronomist John Lacy said despite cooler temperatures in February, early-sown crops were faring well.

Monopoly rice exporter SunRice last week made its first advance pool payment for this season, and released its first price estimate.

Its estimated pool price for reiziq rice is $300-$320 a tonne and $280-$300 for sherpa.
