South Australian irrigators gain desal security

THE South Australian Government intends to use its desalination plant to shore up its Murray River irrigators’ water supplies.

In its draft SA River Murray Prescribed Watercourse Plan, the Government has decided to crank up the output of its Adelaide desalination plant when irrigators’ allocations fell below 100 per cent.

“This allows the release of an additional 50 gigalitres of River Murray water to irrigators when they are on allocations of less than 100 per cent,” the draft plan states. “This is worth an extra 8 percentage points to irrigators in dry years.”
